Finding Your Niche:
What, how, why?
After my post in our group this week asking about the biggest challenges you're facing with your businesses right now, I saw an obvious theme: Finding your niche. Let's talk about that for a minute.
What Does Finding Your Niche Really Mean?
Finding your niche means identifying a specific area or group of customers that resonates with your unique handmade creations. It’s about focusing on a segment of the market where your crafts can truly shine and meet the specific needs or preferences of that audience. But here’s the plot twist: your niche isn’t just about what you’re making; it’s also about who you’re making it for. That’s where understanding your demographic comes in. They are both equally important and often lumped together. So, when we talk about finding your niche, remember it’s not just about the "what," but also the "who." Getting this combo right is your secret recipe for making products that people can’t wait to get their hands on.
How Do You Find Your Niche?
I think this is where people tend to overcomplicate things. It's easy to get overwhelmed with "analyzing this" or '"researching that" and you find yourself lost in a sea of online gurus confusing you more, and ultimately feeding your own self doubt. Finding your niche doesn't need to be rocket science. Keep it simple. It’s basically about discovering that special spot where your creations really connect with people. Think of it as finding a group of folks who just get what you’re all about. There's breadcrumbs to follow. You just need to learn how to "read the room" in a sense.
So, how do you find this magical place? Start by making what you love. It’s your passion that shines through your work and is a massive key to unlocking your niche. Then, take a peek at the market. What’s hot right now? More importantly, what’s not there that you can bring to the table? Also, picture who would love your work (demographic 😉). What are they like, and why would they adore what you do? Ask for opinions. What do people love about your crafts? What could be better? This feedback is super helpful.
Ok, that's cool... but why bother with all this?
Well, it helps you stand out. Instead of trying to please everyone, you get to focus on people who really dig your style. And let’s be honest, it’s way more fun to make things for people who are as excited about your work as you are. Remember, this doesn’t have to be a stressful thing. It’s more like a fun adventure in creativity. Every little thing you learn helps you connect with your craft and the people who love it.
So, where are those "breadcrumbs" I mentioned?
Think about your biggest hits. What are your top sellers in your shop? What did you post that got people excited? Who's snapping up these items? Think about the personality of your typical customer. Are they looking for a laugh, a motivational boost, or something pretty to bring some happiness to their day? Are they looking for gifts or items for themselves? Are they buying apparel and accessories or throw pillows and home decor items? Your popular items give you a sneak peek into who your audience really is. These favorites are not just successes; they're your roadmap to understanding your niche. Your "breadcrumbs."
Which of your creations got more love than you anticipated? Reflect on this. The answer could be a big clue about your niche AND demographic.
Researchy Nerd Stuff:
What is Debbie Talking About?
Let's break down some examples to save you from that rabbit-hole. What are some relevant niches (products to offer) and demographics (who to sell them to)? Do you see how pinning both of those down might change the products you offer or how you offer them? If you primarily sell drinkware and your customers clearly gravitate to female coffee addicts who wear that title with pride, would they get very excited over a water bottle reminding them to drink enough water every day? No, they want a mug or tumbler that says "Death Before Decaf" right?
Now, I can complicate this more of course. There's always the demographic who doesn't care what *substrate* you put it on. Personally, I would likely fall in that bubble. Give me a tumbler OR a throw blanket that looks like a tortilla, this taco-loving foodie would be down for both. But, did that just become a new niche... See what I did there? Niche and demographic have a fuzzy line. Find your people and give them what THEY want. That's your niche.

Full disclosure: Don't ask me who MY demographic is. Obviously my niche has fallen into sublimation designs, and the demographic is subbers. People who do sublimation is pretty broad and not the type of "digging into a demographic" I would like to see. But, narrowing down my actual demographic is allll over the place. I made no plan, it just happened. Luckily my little melting pot tolerates the assorted variety of designs and content I provide, because clearly my demographic is just "awesome humans" 😜
